“Gospel Without Borders”
Oct. 12, 6-8 p.m., Great Hall; free and open to the public

“Gospel Without Borders,” an educational documentary on

immigration, is produced by EthicsDaily.com and sponsored by The United Methodist Foundation of Arkansas (UMFA). Ilff is hosting the half-hour film screening followed by a panel discussion.

The event is co-sponsored by the Colorado Council of Churches whose director, Jim Ryan, will moderate the discussion.

“Gospel Without Borders” promises to separate myths from facts by examining what the Bible says about treatment of the “stranger,” exploring the experiences of unauthorized immigrants, and providing tools for Christians to advance the common good.“We hope this documentary will strengthen the voices of compassion and justice, says Jim Argue, president, UMFA. “The loud and angry voices of hate and fear have been well represented in the film,” he added.Featured panelists:
• Elder Andrew Simpson, District Presiding Elder of the African Episcopal Church
• Rev. Nancy Bowen, District Executive for the Unitarian Universalists
• Miguel De La Torre, a professor of social ethics at Iliff School of Theology in Denver

“Gospel Without Borders was developed in an ecumenical fashion, designed for use by the entire church,” says Stephen Copley, director of Justice for Our Neighbors in Arkansas and UMFA liaison for the documentary. “There is a deep need to understand what our faith tradition says about immigration.”

This one-hour film tells the story of Angie Zapata, a young transgender woman brutally murdered in Greeley, Colorado in 2008. Her death and the subsequent trial received widespread coverage for its brutality.  This moving and powerful documentary chronicles the life and murder of Angie Zapata — a transgender teen who was murdered in rural Colorado in 2008.  The film includes extensive interviews with her family about her journey of self-discovery, transgender lives across the globe, hate crimes legislation, and the mysterious nature of her killer — all against the backdrop of his trial.  The film features a haunting score by Mackenzie Gault of the band The Flobots and a song from L.A.-based, Ozomatli.
