Remembering Mary: A call for gender justice

Posted by Robyn on December 20, 2009 in Feminism, Theology |

My friend and colleague, Michael Castro from The University of Denver/Iliff School of Theology wrote the following prayer for his church, The Highlands Church, located in Denver, Colorado.  It is a Call to Action regarding Gender Justice.  Please see below:

God of Justice and Compassion,

We thank you for showing your favor to Mary. Though she was marginalized by
society as a woman, You selected her.  Though she was ostracized for being
poor, You shed Your light.  Though she was young, You trusted her.

We know Your favor is upon the poor and the oppressed of the earth. Today we
remember the women of the world like Mary who stand in the distant shadow of
men.  We keep in mind those who are denied their civil rights because of
their gender. We remember those who are deprived of leadership positions in
the Church and pushed aside because they are women.  We recall those who are
unjustly under-paid for no other reason than their gender.

God, give a heart of compassion for those women throughout the world who
suffer. Give us courage to heal their wounds.  Grant us a passion for gender
justice even if it costs us.  Help us to follow in the footsteps of Jesus,
the liberator of women.

Amen.
