Hispanic Theological Initiative, day 1
Today was my first full day at the Hispanic Theological Initiative. I am writing from Erdman’s Hall on the campus of Princeton University. It is 11:25 EST, and I have just returned from the Princeton Bar & Grill. I went with four of my colleagues who are in varying stages of the Ph.D. program. One faculty person joined us for the 2nd round of beers.
Today was the workshop on mentoring. First year recipients of the HTI joined faculty mentors exploring the complexity and necessity of mentorship with Latin@ scholars. I am certainly enjoying the folks that I am meeting. I wasn’t sure what I would face when I arrived: would they be welcoming to a queer, mestizo, agnostic? I am delighted that everyone is so very kind and nurturing and more than welcoming. After all, they are Latin@s. Amazing people, they are. Some are from or have roots in Mexico (like me), others are from the Dominican Republic, Puerto Rico, Colombia, or Costa Rica. Their studies range from Ethics and Systematic Theology to Church History and Practical Theology. My worship leader partner does theology/history of the body and construction of the body. I feel more than welcome in this space. In fact, even at the bar over beers we talked about Luther College and its influence in the world. I feel really great knowing someone who has attending Luther College, and knowing how great she is. I enjoy knowing that though this faculty person is now at Drew, she had a substantial influence while at Luther College in Decorah, IA.
Life as a Latin@ scholar will be challenging. I also heard that today. I heard that Latinas, particularly, fight every step of the way. Loida Martell-Otero said that earlier. In fact, many of the faculty have said some amazing things. At the end of the day, I feel encouraged to be in this space, conceptually and practically. I feel like I belong. And, as many of you know, that is one of my most difficult tasks: belonging. I struggle each day to find a space/place within the academy. It is white, the system is racist, but there are some prophetic whites who encourage, challenge and critique me. These white prophetic colleagues are colleagues of a lifetime. And, the folks I’ve met here. Well, they’re just pretty damn cool, and way smart! I am glad I am here! It is late, and my day begins early! I must quietly head to bed and trust in the good things that I will encounter mañana! Buenas noches. . .
