…but what if “we” don’t want it?…” White Privilege that is…
Each morning I begin a blackberry conversation with a friend of mine from California who is now living in Chicago. Today was no different. It began with: “morning ‘Lotus!”…She calls me Lotus after my discovery of the Lotus flower and its symbolism and beauty. I replied to her: “good morning!” This began our blackberry conversation! But, today was a particularly unusual conversation as it went toward the critical and political side of this, which for some blackberry conversations with this friend is not too terribly unusual, but it is Friday!
Today…the conversation went toward White Privilege! I was having that discussion via blackberry messenger…yes, I have these sorts of critical discussions via blackberry messenger…concerning white privilege! The reply that I read was:
”we can all have white privilege…I’ll make it available!”
To which I replied:
What if we’re not all white and don’t want the privilege?
I have seen both worlds: extreme poverty and extreme privilege. I chose to live a life of intention and meaning by becoming a theologian. For those of you who refuse to “follow” a path of religion, that’s fine, or “rebel” against the church, that’s fine too! I choose to follow the Way of Jesus which is the way of Justice, as I understand it! Its the way against privilege, against capitalism, the way on the margins, the way away from the center and the way of deep and abiding love.
Back to the blackberry messenger conversation…because I know that’s what you’re really interested in reading! I have these conversations often with this person–we rant mostly and try to figure out how to remain engaged in this world in the midst of such confusion and great scandal of skewed value systems! Me in my early 30s with a Master’s degree in Theological Ethics and my friend in her mid 40s who works in the business world. We discuss a whole host of things from life to fun stuff to issues. And, then we park it there at issues and the politics of issues and try or seek and find ways to live the quesions–that’s how I phrase it, at least!
So, the question remains, If white privilege was presented to us…what if we’re not all white and we don’t want that type of privilege?! What if we’re trying to do it differently?!
