If you’ve ever had the occasion to share a cup of coffee with me or beer [my two absolute favorite beverages, then you know that I am a lover of people and people's stories! I am most moved at the tenacity and strength that people show amidst great adversity, and I am saddened at how systems of injustice continue to perpetuate death for the least of these. If you know me, then you know my first love is that of truth, beauty, and goodness [i.e. theology], and the way or path of justice. Therefore, in an effort to work against the ideologies that are death bringing, consider the following action alert from the CFW:
| ACTION: COMBAT HUMAN TRAFFICKING ILLINOIS Rescue and RESTORE OUTREACH DAY: SAT., APRIL 26 Join a team or be a team leader in your community!
Why? The State of Illinois has partnered with the Federal government to combat labor and sex trafficking in Illinois. Led by Gov. Rod Blagojevich, Illinois has joined the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services and other law enforcement, social service, and advocacy organizations across the state to fight what the governor has described as a modern-day form of slavery. To reduce the number of people exploited, the Illinois Rescue and Restore Campaign each year puts up outreach posters around the state, wherever victims might see them. The posters are designed to raise awareness about the seriousness of human trafficking and publicize the national hotline. What can I do? Volunteer to spread the word. Organize your own team or join one already formed. As a volunteer, you will canvass neighborhoods in groups of two or three and hang 11″ x 17″ color posters in local businesses and establishments such as Laundromats, hair salons, dry cleaners, convenience stores, grocery stores, coffee shops, gas station restrooms, apartment buildings and other public posting areas. When? Saturday, April 26, 2008 Where? In your community. How Do I Sign Up? Visit the Illinois Rescue and Restore webpage to join a team or become a team leader. Who Should Come? Everyone who wants victims of human trafficking to know that they are not alone and services exist to help them. |
