Lack of health insurance coverage among millions of Americans remains one of this nation’s most pressing social challenges, but one that is often not well understood. I am spending time now to think about my project. I want to begin with a clear idea and craft a way to write to the end. Doing this will serve me well! As I consider my project, I am drawn to develop a baptist statement on access to care. This may be a bit unusual since baptists generally don’t have overarching statements. This would seem a bit too creedal for many baptists. But, given the nature of community within baptist life and how this is similar to life within Latinos, I’m thinking that I can work to develop a statement regarding access to care. This statement can be similar to other denominations’ statements but will embody the free church spirit alongside a mandate to allow access to care for all.
So, I have more thinking to do along these lines–thinking to tie together method, theology and ethics.
More to come!

The church needs to declare its own Independence Day from nationalism, militarism and consumerism, it will begin and end with confession.
Thinking about Independence Day or what is commonly referred to as “the 4th”, the following statement on FaceBook caught my attention. It was written by a Quaker. Being Baptist, I can certainly identify with this sentiment. I wish to celebrate an Independence Day which is rooted in the Politics of Jesus, a way that requires a costly compassion and a radical love.
So, as we move closer to the 4th of July might we remember the costly and radical compassion toward which we are called!
